Fireplaces are valued for the warmth, character, and atmosphere they bring to a home. However, an older wood-burning fireplace can eventually become difficult and expensive to maintain.

Years of use may leave the interior covered with soot, fine dust, and creosote. Exterior chimney bricks can also deteriorate after prolonged exposure to weather. In some situations, properly restoring or replacing the complete fireplace and chimney system may require extensive construction.

The Story Behind the Concept

The inventor developed the original Firebox Encapsulator after purchasing a home with an aging solid-fuel fireplace. The chimney extended above the roofline, its exterior brickwork was deteriorating, and the inside contained soot and creosote.

Replacing the entire fireplace and chimney would have required a significant renovation. Instead, the inventor sketched a heavy stainless-steel enclosure that could fit inside the existing fireplace and provide a clean area for gas logs.

A working prototype was constructed and has reportedly remained in use for more than 20 years. This experience led to the realization that other property owners may face similar fireplace and chimney concerns.

How the Firebox Encapsulator Works

The Firebox Encapsulator is designed as a pre-built, single-body enclosure that fits within an existing fireplace.

Its primary structure includes two lateral side panels, a flat bottom panel, and a continuous curved panel that forms the back and top of the enclosure. Together, these components encapsulate the older firebox interior and provide a clean stainless-steel surface for a natural gas or propane gas log system.

The curved back-and-top panel is an important part of the design. It helps direct heat toward the fireplace opening and into the room. A series of reinforcing creases extends across the curved panel to add structural strength and rigidity.

Vented and Non-Vented Configurations

Two prototype configurations have been developed.

The vented configuration includes an exhaust vent integrated through the curved upper panel. Depending on the installation, the vent may connect with an appropriate building ventilation system.

The non-vented configuration retains the same stainless-steel body, curved panel, reinforcing creases, side panels, bottom, and open front but does not include the exhaust vent.

Both configurations are designed to accommodate natural gas or propane gas log systems. The appropriate configuration depends on the gas log system, installation conditions, manufacturer requirements, local regulations, and applicable building codes.
